This episode of FNX NOW produced in partnership with Ethnic Media Services as part of their briefings tracking the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on ethnic minorities discusses Climate Change and its effects on minority groups as well as Native American and indigenous communities in the U.S. Watch Now FNX Now: "Affirmative Action" on Ballot in California In 1996 the state of California passed Proposition 209, as an initiated constitutional amendment. The Proposition added Section 31 to the California Constitution's Declaration of Rights, which said that the state cannot discriminate against or grant preferential treatment on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting. Though that might sound anti-discriminatory towards minority communities, women and people of color, Proposition 209 also banned the use of affirmative action which guaranteed consideration to underrepresented groups and thus statistically, directly affected Black, Latinx and Native American communities in attending colleges and universities, being considered for jobs, and government contracts. This November, Proposition 16 aims to return the affirmative action initiative to California, by overturning prop 209, which poses the question: Can Affirmative Action reduce racial and ethnic inequities. Watch Now FNX Now: The Science of COVID This FNX NOW segment is a continued partnership with Ethnic Media Studies (EMS) and deals with the science of Covid-19. Tracking the Pandemic: What we still don't know about the virus, treatments and vaccine, stopping the spread. Seven months into the pandemic, what have we learned about the virus and what do we need to know? How close are we to a vaccine and what treatments work best? Why haven't we been able to stop the spread? Watch Now FNX Now: Amid Pandemic, Non-White and Ethnic Immigrants Targeted Across many southern states, there are tribes and tribal communities who are split between the U.S. and Mexico border. This includes Federally recognized tribes like the Kumeyaay, Kickapoo, Tohono O'otom, and Yaqui - who have had long standing immigration issues pertaining to community members of Mexican nationality. The Trump administration which ran a successful presidential campaign on an anti-illegal immigration platform, shifted some efforts to target legal immigrants specifically from south of the U.S. border. This episode of FNX NOW produced in partnership with Ethnic Media Services explores some of these policies which target Latin American, Asian and other non-white minority immigrants and looks for examples that pinpoint race based attacks in contrast to White-European or Anglo immigrants, like those from countries like Russia. Watch Now FNX Now: Indigenous Language Radio Across the country there are 574 federally recognized American Indian Tribes and Alaska Native Villages and an additional 245 tribes seeking federal recognition. Nearly one-third of the Native American population lives on reservations or Tribally owned lands, which excluding Alaska surpasses 55 million acres, - or 2.3 percent of the continental United States.. Within these lands, Fewer than 100 broadcast radio stations are licensed to Tribes or affiliated groups, and when you consider other indigenous peoples including those from south of the U.S. border that currently livi the U.S., less than a fraction of a percent of radio stations serve Native and Indigenous populations in their own languages.
